Updated: AOC to Endorse Bernie Sanders at Queensbridge Park Rally Saturday

Bernie Sanders (Official Facebook Page)

Oct. 15, 2019 By Allie Griffin

This story has been updated on Oct. 16.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders for president at a rally in Long Island City Saturday, according to reports.

Ocasio-Cortez will appear with Sanders Saturday at Queensbridge Park where she will formally endorse him, according to The Washington Post which credits two people with knowledge of her plans as its sources.

Sanders will host the rally at 1 p.m. at Queensbridge Park, located on Vernon Boulevard by the Queensboro Bridge. Access to the rally starts at 11:30 a.m.

Sanders, 78, is back on the campaign trail after taking a break to recover from a heart attack he suffered earlier this month.

The heart attack took place on Oct. 1 after he experienced chest pain at an event in Las Vegas. Doctors inserted two stents to clear a blocked artery.

He told reporters outside his home the following week that he would slow down the pace of his campaign.

“We were doing, you know, in some cases five or six meetings a day, three or four rallies and town meetings and meeting with groups of people,” Sanders told the New York Times. “I don’t think I’m going to do that.”

Sanders has held a rally in Long Island City before. In 2016, he went to Hunters Point South Park when he was battling it out for the Democratic nomination against Hillary Clinton.

Ocasio-Cortez’ office could not be reached for comment.

DEMOCRACY IS BACK IN QUEENS!
After 20 years of voter suppression, democracy is restored to Queens. The Bernie Sanders/AOC rally this weekend gloriously symbolized the end of an autocratic era. Our borough has not had a rally like that in decades. A crowd of 25,000, with thousands turned away, welcomed Mr. Sanders, and what he stands for. Their concerns and fears have a voice, after decades of being ignored. Former Congressman Joseph Crowley, ousted by AOC, was never legitimately elected to Congress. He was “appointed” in a backroom deal by the Queens political machine, and remained in office because his machine attorneys, who still control the Queens Democratic Party and Queens BOE, intimidated away and used legal maneuvers to block all viable opponents off the ballot.. They also dictated which politicians could run for every seat in Queens. Essentially Crowley was like a despot. He expected to stay in office for life, lived and spent most of his time in D.C., building his own career, serving his corporate donors instead of his constituents, and left his extended family and cronies in Queens to milk our borough dry. Crowley arrogantly underestimated AOC, the young Latina bartender from the Bronx, and we should all be grateful, whether we support her platform or not, at least we all have a voice again. The rally this weekend was a potent symbol of democracy revived in Queens. The hope and enthusiasm was palpable. Queens machine RIP!

25,000 people showed up at the rally in a city of 8.5 million people. Not impressive at all. Not that I’m a fan of Trump, but he gets 40,000 people to come to his rally in small Mid-West towns.

There was never a doubt AOC was going to endorse Bernie, but only in deciding the best Time to do so. This was exactly when Bernie needed this, I’m so happy for all of US!

As a supporter of Warren and Sanders, I would say this endorsement from AOC and rally could help him reach other voters beyond the typical young white base. More needs to be done to bring this movement and message out to Black and Hispanic community throughout this country. A reporter on NY1 said that the majority of people he interviewed the other day about the rally who happen to be Black and Hispanic and live in Queens-bridge Housing had no idea who Sanders was but heard of AOC.

AOC is admired not just by the far left but by a broad swath of democrats who want to see their part have a backbone on major issues. Her endorsing Sanders will likely give Sanders a boost more than anybody else. I am so proud to be living in AOC’s Northern Astoria!!

I love it when Trump lovers pretend they don’t worship the rich. That’s why you voted for the developer that lives in a golden tower with his name on it right? lmao

Bernie’s plan would raise HIS tax rate? How about Trump’s?

Very scary to see how many dictators we have in what was once Astoria. Born and raised it has become a cesspool of hysteria and unreason. How can you validate the taxation of hard working legal Americans to provide for scammers and criminals??? I don’t see the logical reasoning? Get a job, go to school, work a trade, follow the law; very simple in the greatest country in the world. And by the way I’m not white either as you “progressives” love to use race! Oh and I’m an actual born woman who is younger than 40! I don’t fit your narrative because I worked my butt off and never blamed anyone for my errors and I’m not obsessed with technology. I wish sensible people would go to these rallies and counter-protest but we’re too busy being “stupid” by going to work supporting all the freeloaders!

The majority of the “woke” crowd are transients who are living in NYC temporarily, and then will move on. Probably from small conservative areas where they didn’t feel like they fit in. Now they are living the bright lights big city live. Don’t be fooled. These are people with minimal responsibilities and juvenile ideas, who haven’t got a clue. All that matters to them is if it is trending.

AOC rides in like the cavalry and saves the day. This is the nucleus of not just a long-term political movement, but a new political party. If it wins it will completely remake the Democratic Party.

AOC reportedly called him while he was in the hospital after his heart attack to offer her endorsement. He was diving in the polls. So yeah, she threw him a lifeline when he should have taken his body’s cue to exit the race. But she also is facing a credible primary opponent who is known in the Bronx and she needs to shore up support in Queens.

Bernie and AOC both identify as Democratic Socialists, which is already like a third party. He knows that running as a third party candidate is not a politically viable way to win elections. But it sure can hand it to the opposition.

Stop fooling people AOC

When will they show us a balanced budget on how all of this free stuff will get paid for? More taxes from just the rich? I don’t think so. Believe me, we will all get taxed. We all deserve health care, but we definitely don’t deserve to wait for a primary to see us and then a specialist. Why is that element of free health care never discussed. I was part of a socialist country in my youth. It didn’t work out. It never works out. Since the press conference is in LIC, will it be brought up that the good people of LIC are better off without what Amazon was offering or would they have been better off with those jobs. The path to a recession is inevitable, and those Amazon jobs would have put food on the tables one day for someone. I may not like Trump, but I don’t like socialism either.

Need protesters to attend this Sanders / AOC rally. Tell people that Socialism is wrong for the United States and does not work. Their ideas like the Green New Deal are unworkable, and if implemented would bankrupt the country. Promote free market solutions to climate change and healthcare. Some government programs are necessary, but not at the expense of wrecking the economy.

Unfortunately, free market solutions won’t ever serve the needs of the most vulnerable. Capitalism by definition has winners and losers, and the deck gets more stacked against the losers over time.

Bernie Sanders is the way forward. He’s a good man from Brooklyn.

Born and raised in Queens, a union member, registered Democrat, a teacher, and homeowner in Astoria, I will be voting for Senator Sanders.

Sanders in 2020!

Sanders can't win

Sanders will never be president. If he is the Democrats’ candidate, Trump will win. Same for Elizabeth Warren. They may be popular in some small parts of New York, but not in the rest of the country. They are outside of the mainstream, which is something that the “woke” crowd doesn’t get or care about, probably because they are too busy admiring their own purity to notice anything else. Go ahead and nominate either one of them and watch Trump win re-election.

I disagree. Trump has no chance in this election. He has alienated enough of the country that he needed already. Worst thing to happen would be for him to be impeached. Pence or any other republican monkey has a chance.

It’s true Trump has alienated most people. A majority favor impeaching and removing him from office. A slight majority 51%, more or less. But that doesn’t mean that people will vote for Sanders or Warren. Especially since they both want Medicare For All. What about people who like their current health insurance? Are they suppose to give it up for something that may not be as good? And how will it be paid for? Neither one will say, but the only way is to raise everyone’s taxes. You think people will like paying for something that they may not want or need, but are forced to accept. People may not like Trump, but they are not going to vote against their own best interests.

I’m sorry to tell you that Bernie would stand no chance in this election against Trump. As ridiculous and unworthy as most might think he is (not debating that he isn’t), Bernie would get smoked. Warren is the only hope for Democrats. He’s not going to get impeached, they’ve been trying for 3 years. Just get a somwhatdecent candidate and the win over Trump should be easy. Stop with the extreme nonsense. Most people are looking for someone else to vote for other than Trump and nobody half way decent has made it to the forefront.

Noise is right. That’s about all “progressives” do. Make noise. Usually by whining. How about cheering the man. He may not be the best candidate, but he does have tenacity.

Wishing Bernie a speedy recovery but he would be a terrible candidate to face Trump. Trump would brand his as a socialist/communist in poor health. Bernie, your time has passed. Go home, recover from your heart attack and enjoy the company of your family and friends!

Funny how a statement of well-known FACTS can draw so many automatic down votes, although I really could care less about up or down votes.

Bernie had a heart attack. JVB already endorsed Warren. Both statements are facts.

With all due respect and based on FEC fundraising breakdowns and Act Blue zip code analysis Bernie is raking in donations at double the number of his closest competitor in Obama/Trump swings , yes that would be the exact areas we absolutely have to win back electorally #Bernie2020 and btw the issue with his one artery has been addressed and treating physicians checked out the other arteries and found no problems.

FDNY prevents disaster in East Elmhurst by seizing 68 illegally stored propane tanks

For the second time in four months, FDNY fire inspectors averted a potential catastrophe in East Elmhurst after finding stockpiles of illegally stored propane tanks in the residential neighborhood.

Fire inspectors from the Special Investigation Unit received a complaint of illegal occupancy at a home just south of LaGuardia Airport at 23-57 89th St. They discovered 68 propane cylinders, which they seized along with five food trucks and a box truck parked on the property last week. The inspectors also found illegal single-room-occupancy in the home’s cellar.
