BJ’s Wholesale Club and Burlington Coat Factory Coming to Plaza 48

BJ’s Wholesale Club Moving into the former National Wholesale Liquidators Spot (Photo: QueensPost)

June 21, 2019 By Christian Murray

BJ’s Wholesale Club and Burlington Coat Factory are likely to be opening on 48th Street in the mall that used to house National Wholesale Liquidators and Toys R Us.

Heidenberg Properties Group, the owner of the 35-00 48th Street mall, went before Community Board 1 Tuesday to get the lots rezoned in order for these stores to open.

The property owner needs a special permit since “variety stores” and “multi-use” stores do not meet zoning code, and require special permits.

National Wholesale Liquidators needed to get the same permit before it opened due to a quirk in the zoning code. The site is zoned for uses such as hardware from the days when Pergament operated out of the space.

Florence Koulouris, the district manager for Community Board 1, said the board voted 29 to 2 in favor of granting the permit, with one abstention. The board asked the property owner to conduct a traffic study.

BJ’s will be opening in the former National Wholesale Liquidators store while the Burlington Coat Factory will be coming to Toys R Us. There will be little change to the buildings.

No time line was given as to when they would open.

The application will be going to the Queens Borough Presidents office to be reviewed, before the City Planning Commission and City Council vote on it. Little opposition is expected.

National Liquidators closed at the end of 2018 while Toys R Us last summer.

I am a Senior Citizen, Educated, not a Slob, but on a SS Income.
I find many good things at BJ’s for lower prices. If the store is a mess, I agree it’s not kept under the Correct Supervision of a Manager. This can be Complained to Since You are Shopping There!

I would like to see a Walmart in my area. There are none in the five boroughs because the unions and politicians don’t want them.

Another bloated box store that lazy fat asses will need to drive their gas guzzling SUVS to in order to stock up on 6lb tubs of cheese puffs. Perceived value. It will quickly turn into a cesspool given the demographics of low class slobs who swarm these types of stores throwing crap everywhere. But yay a bunch on minimum wage jobs that no one can afford to live on-unless they commute from Siberia.

ANOTHER racist post from Pat Macnamaracist?

Maybe people that don’t make a lot of money aren’t “low class slobs” but I know the Trump Lovers don’t really do nuance.

Too small.

I just don’t think the space can accommodate a store like BJ’s. It’s too small.

Closing of local stores is the trend of retail. Regardless of the neighborhood. Is called the Amazon effect.
Nationwide.

Very good stores for the neighborhood but not good news for Stop and Shop or Food Bazaar. Then again, the single folk will still need to shop at these supermarkets unless they want a 10 year supply of mustard for themselves. The traffic will be a lot worse, if that’s possible.

Hahaha good bye costco on Vernon blvd..even though BJs are slightly higher priced I prefer them. Costco on Vernon has become trash, they barely have anything, merchandise selection has become crap in the last 3 to 4 years.

I live a couple blocks from this location and I am excited. But I recently renewed my membership at Costco’s and they refuse to cancel it and refund my money. I wish this article came out sooner.

I don’t get the membership crap. The items sold here can be found at Walmart or Amazon for the same price and cheaper. No purpose to buy a club membership card.

Don’t get to attached, they opened one up near us and one day put up a sign that they were closing the doors. Now you have to drive clear across town if you want to go there. So dropped them and joined BJ’s because it’s closer.

Queens gun buyback takes 74 firearms off streets, including ghost guns and assault weapons: DA

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Monday that 74 firearms were taken off the streets at the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York in Jamaica during a gun buyback event on Saturday, June 14. The weapons were exchanged for bank cards pre-loaded with cash, with no identification required and no questions asked.

“Gun buybacks serve as a critical tool for reducing gun violence and promoting public safety within our communities,” Katz said. “This Saturday, working with the NYPD and clergy leaders in Jamaica, we received 74 surrendered guns — including five automatic weapons. As a result, these firearms will not be used to cause heartache and tragedy.”
