Ricky’s NYC Steinway location (Christian Murray)

A beauty supply store is closing on Steinway Street this Friday.
Ricky’s NYC’s only Queens location, at 30-83 Steinway St, will be closing permanently on April 19, according to a Ricky’s NYC spokesperson.
The beauty supply store, which has been featured nationally in fashion magazines such as Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, People, and more, has nine Manhattan locations, a Brooklyn location on Flatbush Ave, and a Miami location that will remain open.
The beauty supply store sells a wide variety of hair care and cosmetic products from brands such as Manic Panic, Redken, Sally Hershberger, FHI, Salono, Mattese Elite, OPI, RickyCare, Stila, Burts Bees, Kinky Curly, CHI, OPI, Essie and more.
The closure comes at a time when several retailers on Steinway have shut down.
In the past couple of years Steinway has seen the closure of stores such as Victoria’s Secret; discount store Fallas; Payless; and Aerosoles. Chase Bank closed a branch on the strip in 2017.

Ricky’s filled a gap – sorry to see it go. It is a higher priced store than some, but it carried some things I use regularly and can’t get elsewhere. The bigger problem is that the declining state of Steinway street just does not attract customers that can go elsewhere. What will I do? Probably go to a Ricky’s branch in Manhattan. Or buy online. With the destination missing, the result is that I’m even less likely to go to Steinway. Unfortunate, but that’s the story of it. IMO, why not direct some of this “participatory budgeting” towards Steinway? And what happened to that revitalization plan from last year? Need some leadership here I think.

Steinway Street between 30th ave and Broadway needs a real revitalization plan.
There are tons of people walking Steinway Street on a nice weekend afternoon.
Retail on the main west/east thoroughfares (Ditmars, 30th, 31st, Broadway, 36th) has been solid. Steinway between Astoria Blvd and 30th avenue is fairly strong as well. It’s this strip between 30th and Broadway that has become a huge eyesore of vacant storefronts.
thanks for the update-but if you find the hookah and other flim flam joints between Astoria Blvd and 30th avenue to be an indicator of solid business you are clearly mistaken. Once those leases expire they too will be graveyards. It’s happening already with some of the Muslime clothing stores. The stores between 35th and Broadway are also on their last legs.
Ricky’s is closing lots of stores and has closed several over the past few years. Even though Steinway could use some revitalization, I don’t think this is a Steinway Street problem, more of a problem with changing business and changing customers.
Exactly why buy something at Ricky’s that is grossly overpriced when you can get it on amazon/Walmart for cheap.
Depends on what you buy exactly. One product I buy regularly is stupidly marked up on Amazon. Ricky’s was half the price. Amazon is not the bargain in once seemed to be on many things and Walmart doesn’t carry it.
