A 27-year-old Woodside deliveryman died after he crashed his Yamaha scooter into a minivan in Astoria Wednesday night.
Mariano Canales, who lived on 58th Street, was driving a blue Yamaha Chappy Scooter east down 24th Avenue when he ran into a white Chrysler Town & Country which was crossing 24th Avenue at 33rd Street around 9:17 p.m., police said.
Canales struck the passenger door of the minivan. Responding officers found him lying on the roadway with trauma about the body.
EMS responded and rushed Canales to Mount Sinai Hospital – Queens, where he was pronounced dead.
Canales was heading back to a restaurant after dropping off a delivery, according to the New York Daily News.
The 73-year-old driver of the minivan had stopped at the stop sign before passing through the intersection, police said. He remained at the scene and was not injured.
There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

This intersection is horrible. I live on this block and every single day I see very close calls. There is absolutely no visibility to oncoming traffic. They need to put a mirror on the corner or something. ASAP.
