Uncle George’s Greek Tavern To Be Replaced by Modern Greek Restaurant

March 22, By Michael Florio

A new restaurant is under development at the former site of Uncle George’s Greek Tavern.

The new restaurant, which will be located at 33-19 Broadway and 34th Street, will serve Greek food like its predecessor.

“It will be a similar style to Uncle George’s, just more modern,” said Mike Moustakas, a broker who found the new tenant.

Uncle George’s was a popular Astoria institution known for its gyros, leg of lambs and souvlaki. It closed in June, after being there since 1978.

The business was at its height when George ‘Uncle George’ Polimenakos owned it. However, he died and his widow, Maria, sold it in 2009.

Moustakas said the owner has yet to come up with a name for the establishment and details such as its layout will become available in the coming weeks.

I have fond memories of the great food at Uncle George’s Greek Tavern! I am a native of Pittsburgh, PA, and I fell in love with Uncle George’s and Astoria. I hope the new owner will have the same success!

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Monday that 74 firearms were taken off the streets at the Greater Allen A.M.E. The weapons were exchanged for bank cards pre-loaded with cash, with no identification required and no questions asked.

“Gun buybacks serve as a critical tool for reducing gun violence and promoting public safety within our communities,” Katz said. “This Saturday, working with the NYPD and clergy leaders in Jamaica, we received 74 surrendered guns — including five automatic weapons.
