Two residents to open bakery across the street from Kaufman Astoria Studios

SweetScene

Aug. 2, 2016 By Michael Florio

A mother and daughter combo are opening a café and bakery across the street from the Kaufman Astoria Studios that will offer everything from cookies to salads.

The Sweet Scene, which is expected to open at 35-13 34th Ave within a week, will focus on providing its customers with croissants, sandwiches to a vast selection of coffee.

“We are shooting to open by next weekend,” according to co-owner Eleni Goros.

Goros, who will is opening the cafe with her mother, Vera Parpis, has long wanted to open her own eatery.

Originally they planned to open a Greek tapas restaurant, but did not feel the concept would work at their 34th Avenue location. Instead, the two decided to open a café/bakery.

The two will prepare all the baked good fresh on location.

“We have always loved baking,” Goros said.

She said that the Kaufman location is a big draw for her since she lives just blocks away and grew up in the area. In addition, she said that the studio brings a lot of foot traffic.

“I wouldn’t open anywhere else,” she added. “I live here so I know the community.”

The café/bakery is already generating a lot of anticipation from community members, according to Goros.

“People constantly walk by and ask when we are going to open,” she said. “When we tell them ‘soon’ and what we will offer they get excited.”

The café/bakery will be able to seat up to 12 customers. It will be open from 7 am to about 8 pm, Goros said.

Op-Ed | Four years after Hurricane Ida, Queens deserves real climate resilience

Sep. 2, 2025 By Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas

Four years ago, Hurricane Ida tore through our neighborhoods of East Elmhurst, Corona and Jackson Heights, leaving behind devastation we will never forget. We lost neighbors to the floodwaters. Families saw their homes destroyed, their basements wiped out, their lives upended. Immigrant families—so many of them undocumented—were hit the hardest, often excluded from relief altogether. Ida was not just a storm; it was a wake-up call.
