More than 200 participants have signed up for Hellgate 5K run/walk, as first registration deadline approaches

Nearly 200 people and more than 20 sponsors have already signed up to participate in a 5K run/walk set to take place along the Astoria waterfront next month as part of the 100-year celebration of the Hellgate Bridge.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, September 9, is for both runners and walkers, and will include a 100 meter race for children that will take place by the bridge in Astoria Park.

The 5K fun run will cost $25 for adults who register online before August 14. Children below the age of 12 are free but must still register online. Participants are guaranteed a limited race day T-shirt if they sign up before August 14.

More than 500 participants are expected in total.

“We are extremely excited by the interest in the event,” said Jessica Tusing, the race director and a member of the Hellgate Road Runners Club, which is hosting the event with the online news provider Astoria Post.

The Hellgate Road Runners Club was founded in 1996 by Astoria residents Richard LaMothe, Danilo & Teri Monge and LuAnn & Jared Mestre. LuAnn and Jared currently lead the group that consists of about 150 members.

“The event will be for the entire community and is a great way to celebrate the bridge,” Tusing said.

“Many of my friends come from the group and I even met my husband there,” she added. “Hellgate is my second family and both Jared and LuAnn are responsible for that.”

The 5K fun run will begin at Astoria Park, next to the Veteran’s Memorial. Runners will head south along Shore Blvd, then up through Astoria Park to Ditmars Blvd, along Shore Blvd up 20th Avenue to 31st Street before turning back and finishing next to the Hellgate Bridge. (See map)

“The Astoria waterfront and the park are great places to run and people will see that when they take part in the 5K,” said Christian Murray, publisher of the Astoria Post.

The day will also include a post-race party at Singlecut Beersmiths, located at 19-33 37th Street, at 12:00 pm, where items will be raffled off for those who participated in the 5K.

In total, 20 businesses have signed up to sponsor the 5K fun run, which include:

The full day’s schedule. including other events that will honor the Hellgate’s 100th birthday. are as follows:

8:00 am – Packet Pickup / Same Day Registration / Bag Drop Off (Basketball Court on Shore Blvd)
8:30 am – Kid’s 100m Dash (starting at the corner of Shore Blvd & Ditmars)
9:00 am – 5K Fun Run (starting at Veteran’s Memorial on Shore Blvd)
10:00 am – Awards (Great Lawn)
10:30 am – Little Ones Parade
11:00 am – 100 Year Hellgate Bridge Service, 9/11 Service, & Veterans Memorial Service
