Man tries to steal phone from 11-year-old, boy resists

A man attempted to steal the cell phone of an 11-year-old boy in Astoria Thursday, according to police.

The boy was walking in the vicinity of 21st Avenue and 43rd Street at about 2:20 pm, March 31, when the suspect came up behind him, put his arm around his shoulder and attempted to grab the victim’s phone from his pocket.

The boy resisted and the man fled.

The suspect was described as a white male, 5’6″ tall, weighing 200 pounds with dyed red hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477)

He kind of looks like the registered sex offender who lives on that block. I hope the cops showed the victim his picture.

My bike was stolen in Astoria when i was a child while i was riding it. For me, it was a frightening experience. I hope the child is offered support of any kind if needed. Lets all do our best too look out for our neighborhood children.
