Katz Accuses Caban Team of ‘Reckless Campaign Tactics’

Borough President Melinda Katz announcing her run for Queens District Attorney on Dec. 4 (via Katz for DA)

July 10, 2019 By Laura Hanrahan

The Melinda Katz campaign team says that their candidate has received a raft of angry attacks on social media and are alleging that it is the result of Tiffany Cabán’s “reckless campaign tactics.”

Katz’ criticism comes as the second day of the manual ballot recount is underway in the highly combative Queens District Attorney race. Going into the recount, Katz held a mere 16 vote lead against political newcomer and insurgent candidate Cabán. The two candidates are vying neck-and-neck to replace long-serving District Attorney Richard A Brown who died in May of this year.

The Katz campaign sent out an email to supporters earlier today displaying several tweets sent to the Borough President, ranging from expletive-riddled put downs to accusations of election fraud.

Katz campaign spokesperson Matthew Rey called the tweets, which were not sent by anyone affiliated with the Cabán team, the result of “the Cabán campaign’s persistent efforts to portray a rigged electoral system.”

“The increasing recklessness of the Cabán campaign is deeply troubling for a candidate running for the borough’s top law enforcement job,” Rey said. “Tiffany Cabán’s supporters have been issuing veiled threats of violence and invoking Melinda Katz’ children in a continuing tide of menacing online attacks. This, as the campaign itself continues to try to undermine confidence in the electoral process and manipulate the recount.”

Rey asked Cabán to publicly condemn the behavior and “get her campaign under control.”

None of the tweets shared in the Katz Campaign email, however, make any reference to Cabán.

The Cabán campaign, who say they have also been on the receiving end of hateful tweets, argue that the attention being placed on the social media backlash is a distraction from the ongoing recount and pending court case concerning the validity of 114 affidavit ballots.

“We condemn these hateful comments that have nothing to do with our campaign and have no place in political debate,” said a spokesperson for the Cabán campaign. “While we condemn these nasty tweets, the fact remains that the Katz campaign refuses to join us in making sure Queens voters are not disenfranchised. Our campaign will be at the Board of Elections every day and in court to make sure the outcome of this election is fair, and we welcome the Katz campaign to log off Twitter and join us.”

Cabán no doubt has a throng of enthusiastic supporters in Astoria who want to help her implement her vision! She won overwhelmingly around here and deserves to be D.A.

Caban will be a very lenient prosecutor on serious crimes which is what we DON’T need.

The hubris on Caban. “While we condemn these nasty tweets, the fact remains that the Katz campaign refuses to join us in making sure Queens voters are not disenfranchised. Our campaign will be at the Board of Elections every day and in court to make sure the outcome of this election is fair, and we welcome the Katz campaign to log off Twitter and join us.” This is coming from someone who claimed victory-greeting her supporters before all of the votes were actually tallied!!!

Katz campaign trying to deflect from the fact that they are stealing the election, with these groundless complaints about Caban campaign.
The fact that Joe Crowley’s attorneys Bolz and Reich are “donating” their time to Katz campaign, and that Reich, Crowley and Bolz appointed all the Board of Election workers in Queens, and that those workers decided which votes to keep, or toss out etc. Reich, Bolz, Crowley family have made tens of millions of dollars through their control of courts in Queens – and they are fighting to get Katz in, so they can continue their corruption. Also Crowley wants one of his family members to take Katz’s place as Queens Borough President. Election fraud , tampering, and more will put them in jail, since they opened this can of worms. Everyone in Queens politics knows that Bolz and Reich have been tampering with elections for decades, and that is the only reason Joe Crowley stayed in Congress, not on his abilities or talents.

Katz campaign is absurdly corrupt – simply why are the Crowley attorneys Bolz and Reich defending her for free?
What do they have to gain? This is worse than what Russia’s interference in Trump’s election?

Gerald,

Reich, Bolz and crew have only appointed half of the BOE. The other half is appointed by the Republicans. That is a very important factual distinction. The Dem machine is playing this very straight because they know the numbers will trend in their favor. In fact, the machine went out of their way to import a Republican judge from Brooklyn to rule on the ballots so as not to implicate any of their sitting judges here in Queens which, of course, is EVERY sitting judge since the last Republican Queens Supreme judge left the building in 2007. Clearly, checks and balances in Queens County only apply when the Dem machine needs it. LOL.

Harry, Thank you for pointing out that the BOE staff is bi-partisan. Gerald goes by many names on all Post sites, and I suspect he bears a grudge against the “Machine” because was a rejected candidate in Queens at some point in his/her life. Just a guess.

Do you have any actual criticism?

Or is just calling people “nasty” about all you can muster?

Debate is better than destroying someone

This is how the world is today Donald Duck 2020. Rather than allowing things to play out correctly and holding some level of decency, people just try to one up “who is the worst.” I wish we were still in the time when good old debate was still the thing, not something of the past.

For the second time in four months, FDNY fire inspectors averted a potential catastrophe in East Elmhurst after finding stockpiles of illegally stored propane tanks in the residential neighborhood.

Fire inspectors from the Special Investigation Unit received a complaint of illegal occupancy at a home just south of LaGuardia Airport at 23-57 89th St. They discovered 68 propane cylinders, which they seized along with five food trucks and a box truck parked on the property last week. The inspectors also found illegal single-room-occupancy in the home’s cellar.
