Have your art displayed on a billboard in LIC, Socrates Sculpture Park seeks proposals

Billboard by 2012 winner Catherine Opie

March 1, 2017 By Hannah Wulkan

Socrates Sculpture Park is offering the chance for community members to have their art displayed on a giant billboard at the intersection of Vernon Blvd and Broadway in Astoria.

In a recent announcement, the park announced an open call for proposals for new art centered on the topic of democracy and American identity, which would then be displayed on its “Broadway Billboard” near the intersection of Broadway and Vernon Boulevard.

The call asks artists to consider ideas of the public, citizenship, collectivism, identity, and democratic freedoms while designing their proposals, as well as to take in to account the location of the site.

Proposals for the billboard are due by April 15, and once the application period closes the park will choose two winners that will be displayed later this year.

The first of the two winning designs will be unveiled on the billboard on July 4 “in celebration of and in reflection of the history of American political struggles,” according to the announcement. The second design will go up in the fall.

The Broadway Billboard first launched in 1999, and has since shown more than 30 billboards from artists.

Proposals can be sent to democracy@socratessculpturepark.org, and should include the proposed image, which must be original work and proportional to a 10’ x 28’ billboard, an artists statement of 250 words or less and a resume or bio of the artist.
