Fire responders arrive on the scene to pull out man from East River near Astoria Ferry

Emergency medical technicians jumped into the East River Saturday afternoon to rescue a person, who was clinging to a bulkhead in the water.
The rescue took place at around 4:30 p.m. near the Astoria ferry stop, and videos on the Citizen app show emergency responders in the area.
EMTs Kira Watkins and Robert Szendrey, who are both from FDNY EMS Station 49 in Astoria, pulled the drowning person to safety with the help of police officers, as FDNY Lieutenant John Marino supervised the operation, fire officials said.
The person was taken by medics to Mount Sinai for treatment and evaluation, and there was no update on the person’s condition as of Sunday. It was unclear how the person ended up in the East River.
