Police are searching for a group of suspects who assaulted a cop as he was jogging in Long Island City Friday.
Police said the 43-year-old cop, who was in plainclothes and on his dinner break, was running in the vicinity of Vernon Boulevard and 53rd Avenue at around 6:30 p.m. when approximately nine young men attacked him without provocation.
The officer was kicked and punched by the suspects before they fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction, according to police.
A good Samaritan then came to the officer’s aid and called 911, police said,
The cop, a 15-year-veteran, was transferred to an area hospital in stable condition with injuries to his head, throat, shoulder and knee, police said.
No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, tweeted Saturday that the officer was injured in an “apparently random assault during evening rush hour.”
