Convicted Felon and Disgraced Pol Hiram Monserrate Eyes Assembly Seat

Hiram Monserrate (State Senate)

Nov. 21, 2019 By Allie Griffin

Twice-convicted felon and disgraced politician Hiram Monserrate is attempting to make a comeback in state politics.

The corrupt pol filed paperwork with the Board of Elections Tuesday to challenge Assemblymember Jeffrion Aubry for the 35th Assembly district seat, which represents East Elmhurst and parts of North Corona and Elmhurst.

Monserrate was elected Democratic district leader in East Elmhurst last year, beating out his incumbent opponent, despite his messy history.

In 2010, he was expelled from the State Senate after he was found guilty of misdemeanor assault for slashing his girlfriend’s face with broken glass and dragging her around his apartment building lobby.

Two years later, Monserrate pleaded guilty to misusing more than $100,000 in taxpayer money as a city councilmember. He was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay back the money.

The Democrat has repeatedly attempted to get elected to government office despite his convictions.

He most recently lost a City Council seat to Francisco Moya in 2017 and has also lost senate and assembly elections, following his removal from the senate in 2010.

Assemblymember Aubry didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
