Councilmember Costa Constantinides plans to run for higher office in 2021 and all indications are that it will be for Queens Borough President.
Constantinides held a fundraiser in Astoria last week and the highest donation sought was $3,850. That figure is the maximum allowed for the borough president race and well short of the $4,950 permitted for a citywide office such as mayor or public advocate.
The invitation to the fundraiser reads: “Costa Constantinides a Champion for Queens,” and adds, “I hope I can count on you as we expand upon our legacy and fight for higher office after my current term ends.”
Constantinides is in his final term as a council member and will be forced to vacate his office at the end of 2021. He represents the 22nd District that covers Astoria and parts of Woodside, East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights.
Constantinides would not confirm whether he was running for Queens borough president. However, in a statement, he said: “Through my service on the City Council, I am proud of everything we’ve been able to accomplish…I am committed to fighting for Queens and addressing the challenges that remain throughout the rest of my time in office. I am also eager to explore opportunities to continue to serve the people of Queens and fight for a brighter future.”
Constantinides’ fundraiser comes two months after Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer formed a committee and said he was eyeing a run for the borough president job.
Van Bramer is in his final term and represents Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City and a sliver of Astoria.

What was Viverito doing there? Please god, keep her away from us.
I rather vote for Louis Farakhan than either of these two empty suits.
Maybe Costa is running for a bigger podium – hehe?
To be honest I miss the Vallone’s in Astoria. Back then it was a “community” where everyone knew their neighbor and helped each other. He has allowed “box stores”, big development, etc kill the community and push true Astorians out. Costa keeps saying what a great job he has done – but has anyone seen it get better? The Astoria I have known all my life is gone. Sad
The neighborhood is filled with litter, parking on sidewalks, ugly property expansion, Cube storage companies and cesspool that is the Steinway Industrial zone.
This guy has no long term plan for Astoria let alone Queens.
JVB vs CC, can’t wait! Let’s see which of these two super-heroes is the first to endorse Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez in her bid for Congress versus Uncle Joe Crowley. Which will be the first to endorse Cynthia Nixon running for Governor? That would demonstrate the quality of leadership needed for the presidency of our Borough.
word is out that Mr. JVB is not a happy camper – he thinks this job belongs to him alone – lol
Please no.
