California Farmer’s Market on 31st Street Closes

The California Farmer’s Market off Ditmars Boulevard has closed, with its last day of business held last Saturday.

The 24-hour market, located at 21-61 31st St. opened about six years ago in 2012 and offered organic fruits, vegetables, fish and other grocery products.

Calls to the supermarket for comment were unsuccessful.

The market, in the days leading to its closure, put up signs indicating that items were at half price, and that it was only accepting cash, according to social media posts.

But the closing seems to have been in the works for some months.

Several posts on California Farmer’s Market Facebook page indicate that the business has been for sale since at least April.

The posts, written by an employee at Nest Seekers International, a brokerage firm, say the 11,000 square foot grocery market had annual sales of $3 million.

The asking price was not listed, but the current rent at the site was listed as $18,000 a month.

It is unclear, however, what the plans are for the 31st Street location.

One fact is wrong. California Market did not offer “organic” produce. There were no signs anywhere indicating this.

I loved that market and I’m sorry it’s closing. I think the advent of the ABC building being demolished and the library overhaul must have hurt business. Traffic on that side of the block has not been the same.
