Permits have been filed for a six-story mixed use building on 31st Street.

The building, planned for 23-71 31st St., will feature ten apartments, as well as commercial space located on the first floor and in the cellar.

Demolition permits for the existing building have not yet been filed. The property was purchased in March for $1.8 million.

The building will be 70 feet tall, with 935 square feet dedicated for commercial use.

The building will include storage space for 5 bicycles as well as a gym/recreational room in the cellar. The plans include a roof-top terrace, with two apartments having private terraces.

The property is two blocks from the Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard and Astoria Boulevard (N/W) subway stations.

The property is owned by Aki Development. ND Kazalas Architecture is designing the building.

stop!

Aki are becoming a thorn in the side of Astoria now. They went from cabinetry into development and are not a part of the problem.
That beautiful brick building should stay. We need character in Astoria. Stop building junk and tearing down what makes our neighborhood beautiful.

Astoria is becoming way too overcrowded. I use to think of Astoria as the suburbs when I lived in Manhattan, 25 years ago. I miss the low buildings and private houses, and ma and pop shops along the streets. Unfortunately Astoria is now becoming just like
Manhattan with tall buildings, and big name establishments being built. How sad it is to see this happening to such a beautiful neighborhood.

Many Astorians agree with you. However there is a new generation of new Astorians (mostly renters) that love it around here because it is cheaper than Long Island City and they enjoy the night life and all that comes with it. Only time will tell if the new generation will stick around (like past Astorians) or move on to quieter places when they feel like settling down. Btw, i seen an improvement in Southern Astoria where as Northern Astoria is experiencing a decline.

I live around the block. These new developments are going to happen whether we like it or not. But i am glad it will be mostly residential than commercial. The Ditmars area is a mess and I can imagine what it will be like once all the new commercial developments are completed. And I heard more older stores are being sold on 31 st and ditmars. I hope they keep the commercial area where it belongs.
