June 16, 2020 Staff Report
The bagel store at the center of a viral video that shows a woman deliberately coughing on another customer has apologized for the incident.
New York City Bagel & Coffee House on Broadway–near 30th Street–condemned the woman’s actions in a social media response posted Sunday.
“The behavior of the woman is unacceptable in our establishment,” the message on the NYCBCH Instagram page reads.
“We apologize for the horrific behavior of this woman,” the company said.
NYCBCH said that customers should never be treated in that manner and said it has barred the woman from all of its locations.
In the viral video recorded on June 6, the woman comes into NYCBCH to pick up an order without a mask on. Another customer complains to an employee about it.
The woman takes offense and erupts into a fit of anger. The two exchange words and the staff then serve the woman without a mask her order.
The woman grabs the order and then goes over to the customer who complained and coughs in her face.
The video has gained 4.6 million views on Twitter.
The victim, Ally Goodbaum, later criticized the staff at NYCBCH for serving the customer, according to a Facebook message she posted. She also criticized the staff for not asking about her wellbeing following the incident.
NYCBCH said that its staff were caught off guard and were mostly inexperienced workers, according to the statement.
“Most of our staff and the cashier who were working that day are high school students who were frightened by the behavior of this woman,” the statement reads.
The company stated that it called the authorities but no one came to the scene. It did not specify when the authorities were called.
NYCBCH insisted that customers and employees must wear a mask in all of their stores. The company has three other Astoria locations.
“We told our staff to never serve anyone without a mask or face covering and if the customer gives them any issue to immediately call authorities,” the statement continues.
“We have been making it clear to our staff that all customers must follow proper protocol for their own safety and the safety of those around them.”

Yeah we’re not paid enough to deal with someone’s drama. That’s the manager’s pay grade.
She kinda stormed out the store like a baby before we could ask if she was okay.
It’s unacceptable that NYCBCH does not have a supervisor or manager in front of the store to attend this type of issue at the moment. The lady without maks was there for enough time to pay her attention while was waiting for her drinks and the offended customer did not receive a word of apologies at the time. The employees should be trained to work on this situation.
I’ve seen people regularly going into the 30th Avenue location not wearing any face mask or face covering. I’m curious now if they’re really going to enforce the policy.
I’d like to have a percentage of the lawsuit proceeds on this one!
If she was coming to pick up an order the store must have some info about her identity. She should be pursued for her actions.
Let’s pay all the hourly employees 25.00 an hour plus benefits plus pension and paid holidays off …Get real….people who think like that never ran a business and can’t comprehend what it takes to go into retail ….
“NYCBCH said that its staff were caught off guard and were mostly inexperienced workers, according to the statement.”
You don’t need any experience to tell someone to wear a mask or you don’t get served. In addition, management should take responsibility for not training their staff, not blame them! The mandatory mask in store policy has been implemented for over a month. What took so long? This is nonsense and incompetent.
No apology needed. People are bored and looking for outrage wherever they can. Go after the protestors whose selfish actions and continued defiance of an executive order banning large gatherings may further delay the reopening of the city. The response to this one person’s actions is sickening. Her actions were immature but didn’t warrant the reactions like, “punch her in the face”, “arrest her”, “sue her”. A few weeks ago, roving packs of maskless subhumans laid waste to neighborhoods in Manhattan and the Bronx. Zero outrage. That was justified as an expression of their frustration at systemic racism. This woman enters a bagel store without a mask and she is publicly lynched. Shameful
Why did you have to bring the protestors into this?
Imagine the offender was African American.. Nobody would be able say a thing to her.. Or imagine the victim was African American. There would be a real lynching. Strange times unfortunately. Politics and social tensions are defining the criminality of things..
Or even if just a male? Or a white male? He’d be facing the death penalty instead of still walking the streets. The misandry here is appalling. I guess what goes around comes around since without a lot of the male vote the left is dead and quite literally with the police budget cuts and so many jobs forever lost. It’s going to be a complete disaster.
For not enforcing the mandatory mask!
Yes, hire low-level high school students, don’t give them any training, and pay them only a minimum wage with no benefits. What could possibly go wrong?
Did you ever own a retail store???i did … in no way can a retail store pay more than minimum wage plus at least 700.00 a month for health benefits unless u want to pay 25.00 for a bagel and coffee …
