Astoria Park Waterfront Concerts Kick Off Thursday

July 7, 2015 By Jackie Strawbridge

The annual Astoria Park Waterfront Concert Series kicks off Thursday, July 9, bringing new bands and crowd favorites to the Great Lawn.

From jazz to doo wop to disco, performances will run for six consecutive Thursdays starting at 7:30 p.m. on the park’s Great Lawn, at Shore Boulevard between the pool and the Hell Gate bridge.

The Cab Calloway Orchestra opens the series on July 9, followed by Swingtime Big Band on July 16.

According to Central Astoria LDC Executive Director Marie Torniali, newcomers to the concert series include doo wop group Time Was (also known as Piece of the Rock) on July 30, Danc’in Machine playing disco on August 6 and Spitfire, a rock group, closing out the performances on August 13.

Michael Patrick’s Ring of Fire Band, a Johnny Cash tribute group, was brought back by popular demand after performing last year, Torniali added. Cash fans can catch the band on July 23.

In the case of rain, performances will be cancelled; Torniali said that Central Astoria LDC will post updates on its Facebook page and on its website.
