C-Town Prepares For Closing

Aug. 27, 2015 By Jackie Strawbridge

Broadway’s C-Town Supermarket is in gear to shut down for construction.

Signs have been posted around the store telling customers, “we are in the process of developing the property but we will be back with a brand new store.”

In May, the Department of Buildings approved developers’ plans to build an additional four floors over the property, to hold 64 apartments.

A revamped first floor will hold retail space and a residential lobby, according to building plans.

“It’s going to be a nice, brand new store,” a manager on site Thursday, who declined to give his name, said of C-Town’s future.

The signs posted throughout the store indicate that a timeline for closure has not yet been finalized. However, employees have started emptying the aisles, which the manager confirmed is preparation for the closure.

Developers could not be reached for comment.

Resident Betty Guerrero said she has been shopping at C-Town for decades and will miss its character.

“This is quaint, unique,” Guerrero said. “This is the place for us – it’s a neighborhood store.”
