Bricks Fall From Broadway Apartments, Forces Store To Close

Several bricks fell from a Broadway façade early Tuesday morning, smashing into a storefront below and scattering across the sidewalk.

The bricks came loose above a third floor window at 32-19 Broadway, above Greenbay Essentials, a relatively new offshoot of Greenbay Marketplace, an organic market across the street.

No injuries occurred as a result, according to an officer of the 114 Precinct who was on site Tuesday morning.

A Department of Buildings spokesperson said that a violation was issued to the landlord for “missing brick work.” The spokesperson could not immediately say how long the landlord has to remedy the issue.

On their fall to the ground, the bricks hit a canopy over Greenbay Essentials, knocking a light fixture out from underneath, according to manager Al Ozbek.

The store was subsequently forced to close.

“I’m not very [happy,] but you know – safety first,” Ozbek said.

The property’s landlord declined to comment for this story.

The landlord will probably just promote the fact that their building is made with artisinal bricks and charge $7,000 for a studio.
