Vallone Wants an Ice-Skating Rink in Astoria Park

Proposed Ice skating Rink

Nov. 25, 2013 By Christian Murray

Outgoing councilman Peter Vallone Jr. is calling for an ice-skating rink at Astoria Park.

The Council Member sent a letter to Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner on Nov. 19, requesting that Parks develop the Astoria Park Pool area as a site for a skating rink in Astoria – similar to a rink that was recently opened at the McCarren Park Pool in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Vallone said in a statement that the two parks share many similarities and with the appropriate adjustments a similar rink could be established in Astoria.

The McCarren Park Pool utilizes its “Beach” area, an area adjacent to its main pool, for the site of the skating rink. The Astoria Park Pool has a similar space next to the pool that is used in the summer months for sprinklers, which would be an ideal spot for the proposed ice skating rink.

The city recently allowed a concession agreement between the Parks department and Open Space Alliance of North Brooklyn to maintain and operate the McCarren Park Pool ice rink. The Council Member believes the same type of concession agreement should be reached for the Astoria Park Pool.

“This area in the Astoria Park Pool would make the perfect space for an ice skating rink for the residents of Queens to enjoy during the winter months,” Vallone said in a statement. “With the addition of an ice skating rink to the existing skate park and upcoming amphitheater, Astoria Park would be a destination for every season.”
