50-foot-ark to be on display at Socrates Sculpture Park

SuralArk

April 15, 2014 By Michael Florio

A new exhibit will be docking at Socrates Sculpture Park next month.

The exhibit, called SuralArk, will combine the form of an overturned ship and a suburban home. It will be 50 feet long and 16 feet high, and is expected to be on display from May 11through Aug. 3.

Architects Aleksandr Mergold and Jason Austin, who designed it, said the sculpture represents the blurred lines between city, suburban and rural living environments.

The sculpture was the winner of an annual competition—called the “Folly”–held by Socrates Sculpture Park and the Architectural League of New York. The competing architects were required to design and build a large-scale project that would be displayed at the park.

Jurors examined 171 submissions from over 17 countries before picking SuralArk.

John Hatfield, the executive director at Socrates Sculpture Park, said the design captured the essence of the park’s location.

“As visitors explore its overturned hull at the waterfront, they will be reminded of the park’s industrial heritage and that New York City, with its functional waterways, is indeed a city of water,” Hatfield said. The sculpture also represents a possible escape from the high tides that submerged the park during Super Storm Sandy in October 2012.

SuralArk will be on display at the same time that Queen Mother of Reality is unveiled.

That sculpture is of a of a reclining woman made from reclaimed materials. It will be unveiled on Sunday, May 11, and will remain on view through August 3, 2014.
