Councilman Costa Constantinides took a hands-on approach to his promise to clean up Astoria today when he used a power washer to remove graffiti from a fence on 23rd Street.

Graffiti removal is part of Constantinides’ plan to clean up and beautify his district. He announced a $200,000 budget to keep Astoria clean earlier this month, which included a $21,000 allocation towards the Queens Economic Development Corporation to provide on-demand graffiti removal services, who he joined on their rounds earlier today.

“As I have heard from residents in this area, this fence on 23rd Street has been plagued by graffiti for years.  It is gratifying to be able to help remove this blight from this residential block.  Caring for our neighborhood and keeping it clean for residents and visitors is a top priority for us,” Constantinides said in a statement.

Astoria residents are urged to call Constantinides’ office at 718-274-4500 to report graffiti and have it removed.

Look at Constantinides photop! I can see the election season glossy mailer and street handout with him steam cleaning. Unless, the Councilman pockets the 21k and he resoonds to calls about grafitti by coming out personally and doing the removal?

wakeup

I rode my bike by this area the other day and the graffiti is still there! What a waste of money. Who are they hiring? Day laborers? Just water can not remove graffiti, everyone knows that.

ridiculous

Oh so taxpayers are paying to clean up lots that are being leased for 25-50 dollars a year! Maybe if i park my car under the Amtrack someone will wash my car also!

This is by the parking lot across from where they had the press conference last week about the Amtrack rent hike.

Never Left Astoria

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to but a new fence?

PS – No podium speech before hand?
