The second annual Sunnyside Post Mile is set to take place around the streets of Sunnyside and Woodside in September.
The event, scheduled for Sept. 10, is for both runners and walkers, and the goal is to raise funds for a number of local groups.
“Last year, we had more than 500 participants in our inaugural event,” said Christian Murray, publisher of the Sunnyside Post. “We expect to almost double that number this year.”
The event is being organized by the Woodside-Sunnyside Runners in conjunction with the Sunnyside Post.
Woodside-Sunnyside Runners was formed in 2009 and has hundreds of active members.
The event will start by Lou Lodati Park on 43rd Street. Participants will then turn onto Barnett Avenue through to 50th Street before finishing at Skillman Ave (44th Street). The roads will be closed for the event.
Participants are permitted to run/walk with strollers and dogs are welcome as long as they are on leash and are at the back of the event.
“I think that this is a great way to bring the community together,” said Ann Sansaricq, an organizer of Woodside-Sunnyside Runners. “It’s a local event that will help raise money to beautify the neighborhood while promoting fitness.”
The run/walk starts at 10:00 am, with an opening ceremony kicking off at 9:30 am.
This year, there will also be children’s dashes along Skillman Avenue. They will begin at 10:45 am.
There will be medals presented to the fastest three runners in both the men’s and women’s categories. There will also be medals awarded to children.
The run-walk will cost $20 for adults and $15 for children, with the proceeds to be split among five charities (see below). Participants will receive a Race-day T-shirt and will be eligible for discounts at some neighborhood bars/restaurants afterward.
Participants are encouraged to register before August 24 to ensure the T-shirt size of their choosing.

The charities are:
Sunnyside Artists, which plans to use its portion of the funds to paint a neighborhood mural
Woodside on the Move, which plans to use funds for neighborhood revitalization
The Skillman Project, which plans to bring elaborate decorations to Skillman Avenue during the winter holiday period
Sunnyside Shines, which will use funds for a beautification project south of Queens Boulevard
SUDS (Sunnyside United Dog Society), which will use funds for the upkeep of the Lou Lodati Dog Run and rescue programs
