Astoria: Man who allegedly swiped woman’s laptop caught on tape

Alleged thief

Alleged thief (NYPD)

A worker at an Astoria music company claims that a man entered her employer’s store last night and took off with a laptop.

The secretary of Bravo Sound International, a company that provides DJs and party music for events, said the laptop was stolen while she left the firm’s 25-23 Astoria Blvd office to get something out of her car. The incident took place around 6 pm.

The alleged crook, however, was caught on surveillance video.

The secretary said that the footage shows a man entering the store, looking around and grabbing the laptop (see video). He then put it in his backpack and exited the store.

“I stepped out of the office just to run to my car,” Lena, the secretary, who did not wish to give her last name, said. “It was about 30 seconds to a minute.”

She reported the incident to the police this morning. However, the NYPD press office had yet to receive word that a report was filed.

“You see him on the tape snooping around,” she said. “He walked right by my pocket book, which was on the couch, and looked around for something more valuable.”

“He noticed the laptop and just took it,” she added.

Lena, who saw the suspect outside the store and later on videotape, described him as being between 18 and 21 years old.

Op-Ed | Hochul: Action is Imperative on Shoplifting, but Violent Crime is Just Fine

Negotiations regarding the New York State budget have just concluded a few days ago and a budget has passed after more than two weeks of delays. But while Gov. Kathy Hochul has proclaimed this year’s ‘bold agenda’ aims to make New York ‘safer,’ there hasn’t been so much as a whisper about the safety issue New Yorkers actually care about – New York States’s dangerous bail reform laws and the State’s absence of a ‘dangerousness standard,’ which would allow judges to detain without bail those defendants that pose a present a clear and present danger to our communities. (The 49 other states and the federal government have a dangerousness standard. NY State is the only state that lacks this essential protection from the State’s most dangerous offenders.)
