The annual carnival at Astoria Park kicks off today with a Ferris wheel, games and rides.
The Astoria Park Carnival, presented by the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition, will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Families can head to the Astoria Park parking lot to find the Carnival.
There is no admission fee to the carnival.
There will be a train ride for kids, carnival games and a Ferris wheel, Central Astoria executive director Marie Torniali said.
“The Ferris wheel is set up and looks gorgeous,” Torniali said. “I think that gives the whole aura of the carnival.”
There will also be carnival food for purchase such as funnel cake, hamburgers and hot dogs and fried Oreos.
“You [can] bring your family to an old fashioned carnival right at your doorstep,” Torniali said.
The Central Astoria LDC will also host its annual Independence Celebration with fireworks at the Astoria Park lawn on June 30.
That event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and will include a performance by the Queens Symphony Orchestra.
Attendance typically numbers 15,000 or more, according to Torniali.
“It’s the most fantastic fireworks display, because it’s still homegrown,” she said. “It’s just a wonderful, close-knit event.”
