The Parks Department will revamp a space under the Triborough/RFK Bridge with ping pong tables, volleyball courts and other features geared towards adult exercise and fun.

This project will reconstruct Triborough A Playground, under the bridge at Hoyt Avenue North and 21st Street, steps from where the new Astoria dog park is planned.

According to a Parks Department spokesperson, the reconstruction will bring ping pong tables, two volleyball courts, adult exercise equipment and painted exercise games to the space, which is specifically designed and geared towards adults.

The reconstruction will also allow for new pavements, drainage, fencing and benches to be installed.

Plans for this project were initially announced in 2013. However, it was postponed due to work on the Triborough Bridge above.

The project was funded with $825,000 from the City Council and the Mayor, Parks said. Construction will begin in the fall and is expected to complete by Spring 2017.

Great idea for the youth. I just hope it does not turn into a smoking and alcohol hang out spot. I also hope they look at traffic patterns. That area is not that safe to cross.
