Non-Profit Aims to Help Low-Income Parents with Kindergarten Registration

Feb. 17, 2014 By Michael Florio

A local nonprofit organization is helping local families that lack Internet access register for kindergarten.

Zone 126, a nonprofit organization established in 2011, is assisting residents of Astoria, Queensbridge and Ravenswood, get their children into kindergarten.

The organization says its service is needed since the Department of Education launched Kindergarten Connect, a new online-only kindergarten application that’s being used for the first time this year.

The non-profit held an event on Wednesday at the Astoria Houses, with the goal of helping people navigate the controversial system.

“This is a problem for families in our public housing developments, since only 40 percent have regular access to the internet,” said Crosby Newcomer-Falk, Zone 126 Administrative Projects Coordinator.

Zone 126 is trying to get the word out to parents to submit their child’s application by Feb. 20.
