NYPD: Big Uptick in Astoria Burglaries

Crime is on the rise in Astoria- as the number of burglaries, felony assaults and robberies reported have increased in the past month.

The crime rate jumped 22.7% for the 28 day period ending February 2, compared to the same time period in 2013, according to police precinct 114 (which mainly covers Astoria).

There were 39 burglaries for the 28-day period ending Feb. 2, 2014, compared to 21 for the same 28-day period in 2013. The number of felony assaults has also seen a significant increase over that period, with 26 reported incidents for the 28-day period through Feb. 2, compared to 17 for the same period last year.

In total four of the seven major categories have seen an increase for the 28-day period ending Feb 2, 2014, compared to last year.

–        The number of reported robberies has seen a 20% spike, with five more incidents reported in 2014.

–        There have been three reported rapes in 2014, compared to one in 2013.

–        The number of reported murders was zero, down from one reported case in 2013.

–        The number of grand larcenies were unchanged, with 45 incidents reported in 2013 and 2014.

The 114th precinct community affairs department was unavailable to comment on the trend.

And I agree with Sev. Too many here and there’s coming in making prices rise, creating a false image of what Astoria actually is; a mom and pop town which is being converted into a temporary Williamsburg until they find the next town to plague.

I am not surprised! Astoria used to be the best and safest place to live – Transients bring in the sludge, jack up affordability and now you’re getting robbed! Thanks for the contribution!

Astoria doctor sentenced to more than two decades in prison for rape and sexual abuse: DA

An Astoria doctor was sentenced to 24 years in prison on Thursday in Queens Supreme Court for raping unconscious acquaintances and sexually abusing hospital patients.

Dr. Zhi Alan Cheng, 35, of Broadway, pleaded guilty on June 30 to four counts of rape in the first degree and three counts of sexual abuse in the first degree in satisfaction of the consolidated indictments against him. He additionally entered an Alford plea to one count of sexual abuse. The defendant — a former gastroenterologist at New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital — recorded the abuse of his unconscious victims with his cell phone in both his Astoria apartment and at the hospital.
