A New Bar Focusing on Selling Home Brew Kits has Opened in Astoria

Feb. 5, 2014 By Michael Florio

A new bar featuring home-brew kits and supplies has come to Astoria.

Astoria Beer and Brew, located just off Ditmars Blvd (at 21-76 21st), opened its doors on Monday and its focus is on selling home brew kits.

The home brew kits come with a fermenter and purchasers have a number of different craft beer styles to choose from. Kits start at $85, while ingredients range between $35 and $54.

Customers are able to taste the beer at the bar–before they choose a flavor to brew at home.

“The idea is that they [customers] can try different beers here and we will have the equipment so they can go home and make a similar style,” said co-owner Rodrigo Urbieta.

Currently, the bar does not have its liquor license– although it is expected to arrive any day now. While the store is just selling kits, its open from 12-8 pm each day. However, when its license comes through, those hours will change.

Urbieta along with other co-owners Evan Orlic and Gary Anza plan to sell the kits and equipments online, as well as in bar.

However, the advantage of having a bar is that it encourages customers to be more adventurous, Urbieta said. Those who come to the bar are more likely to taste the lesser known beers and are therefore more likely to make it themselves.
