A popular Greek supermarket has opened a new location.
Mediterranean Foods, a Greek supermarket specializing in imported cheeses, opened last week at 22-78 35th Street, on the corner of 35th Street and 23rd Avenue.
The supermarket has a large selection of Feta cheeses imported from Greece, according to store manager Tommy Tentolouris.
“We have cheeses here that you will not find at other supermarkets,” he said.
The supermarket also has an olive bar, an olive oil station and a Greek bakery.
“These items are very popular,” Tentolouris said.
The owner decided on this location because it provides a parking lot and more space than the Mediterranean Foods location on 23-18 31st Street.
That location opened 15 years ago, but is closing due to an expiring lease, Tentolouris said.
Due to the ending lease, the owner started looking for other locations, but did not want to leave Astoria.
“There is a heavy Greek population in the neighborhood,” Tentolouris said. “We are very popular with these residents.”
The owner recently bought the building on 35th Street, which was a big factor in him taking over this location, Tentolouris said.
The owner also has another Mediterranean Foods located on 30th Avenue and 34th Street. That shop has been in business since 1974.
The market celebrated their Grand Opening last night with live music.

How much is their cleaning fee? There is a lot of bird crap all over that area.
