25 Years of ‘Madden’ Video Games on Display at Museum of the Moving Image

Jan. 29, 2014 By Michael Florio

New York is all about football this week—and the Museum of Moving Image, located at 36-01 35th Ave, is currently holding an exhibit in honor of one of the game’s greatest athletes and the video-game franchise he has built.

The exhibit, which runs until Feb. 23,celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Madden franchise, named after the Super Bowl winning head coach John Madden.

The exhibit features video games that go back to 1988 (built for the Apple II)—to the latest Madden NFL 25 on Xbox One. The exhibit highlights the aesthetic evolution of the series—from pixilated athletes to life-like figures.

The Madden franchise was developed by EA Sports and quickly grew to be the top selling football game in history, consistently ending up on the best-selling list.

In 2004 EA signed a deal with the NFL players’ league giving them exclusive rights to use NFL teams and players.

“There is no better time than now to present the story of the Madden NFL phenomenon at the Museum,” said Carl Goodman, executive director of the museum.
