Lefkos Pyrgos Moving to Former Marathon Bank Spot

Sept. 8, 2015 By Jackie Strawbridge

The Greek bakery Lefkos Pyrgos has announced its move to the old Marathon Bank spot on Ditmars Boulevard.

“Coming soon” signs appeared at the new site – 33-02 Ditmars Blvd. – following weeks of conspicuous renovation work.

Earlier this summer, Lefkos Pyrgos (alternately spelled Lefkos Pirgos) left the space it had occupied for 40 years on the corner of 31st Street and 23rd Avenue, upon the end of its lease. The bakery and three neighboring stores will be replaced by a Time Warner Cable retail store, the company confirmed in July.

According to owner Petros Pantazis, the new location will be similar to the original bakery, with coffee and a selection of Greek pastries, although American lunch and dinner items will be added to the menu.

“There’s going to be more of a mix than what we had at the other one,” Pantazis said in Greek through a translator. “It’s going to be diverse, Greek and American.”

Though he is still working on the menu, Pantazis said customers can expect sandwiches, finger food, baklava and Greek cheese pies, among other items.

The restaurant will seat roughly 50 inside and Pantazis plans to have outdoor seating for about 30 customers, slightly more than were outside the old Lefkos Pyrgos, per Community Board 1 documents.

Pantazis said he expects to open in mid-December.
