A man got into a dispute with a worker at a Steinway Street furniture store, pulled out a knife and then took off with $2,000 cash, according to police.

The alleged perpetrator entered the American Design Furniture store, located at 32-94 Steinway Street, and demanded that he be refunded for a sofa that he claimed he had bought but had not been delivered.

He got into an argument with an employee at around 5:45 pm on Thursday July 23 and then pulled out a knife and placed it against the worker while demanding his money, according to police.

The 24-year-old victim handed him $500 in cash—the amount involved in the dispute. However, the suspect then went on to assault the victim and robbed him of another $1,500 in cash.

The suspect fled the store and drove off in an unknown direction. The victim was taken to Astoria General for minor injuries and was released, according to police.

The suspect is described as male Hispanic, approximately 28-30 years-of-age, 6’0″ tall, 190lbs, short black hair with freckles and wearing a pink shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.

Retailers large and small should be required to install security switches under every register, as well as a lightweight, mobile carry around device for managers on duty should these worst case scenarios occur. A 10-15 min. drill should be practiced weekly of how to thwart attention using a team effort to balance pressure off the mgr; one person. A police duo should be stationed at major commercial districts ready to respond. Devices could close doors/lock someone in, raise max volume on cameras w/ 1 push, etc.

** If the guy really purchased a sofa, he’d be able to produce a receipt. If I make a purchase for anything over $100 and leave the store without it (to pick up or have delivered at a later date) I wouldn’t take a chance of being remembered. He’s a perpetrator through and through. **Just for the record, store policies NEED to be printed on the back of receipts.

Looks to me like another ‘Hooka Smoker’ on Steinway Street. I think it’s time to clean house on that street and send them back home.

So where is home exactly? Egypt? Iran? Pakistan? Iraq? Saudi Arabia? Libya? Turkey? Lebanon? London? I can’t tell, but apparently you can.Or are they all the same to you?

This sounds like a bad business decision. Why couldn’t the business owner ask for a tracking number? How long did he say the sofa would arrive? Who would pay $2000 for a crappy sofa on Steinway street anyway?

It’s Dinkins’ Time again in a neighborhood where homes go for a million and the rents are through the roof.

Yeah. Bloomberg, who was mayor for the last 12 years, could never have seen this coming. Who could have foreseen rents going up, the subways getting more and more unsafe and unreliable, and our population increasing?
