Gelato Shop Opens On Broadway

A new gelato shop called European Ice Cream opened quietly last week at a former nail salon on Broadway.

European Ice Cream opened at 25-11 Broadway on Wednesday and boasts about 20 flavors of gelato, which are made on-site, according to Adrian Iseni, who owns the shop with his father. Coffee and espresso are also available.

After running a similar shop in Slovakia for about ten years, Isenia and his father decided to bring the business to New York. Iseni said he has lived in Astoria for about three years, and was attracted to the vibe on Broadway.

“I always hang out on Broadway,” he said. “It’s a quiet neighborhood, a good neighborhood.”

While Iseni acknowledged concerns about opening at the end of ice-cream season, he noted that the shop may expand its menu during the winter, to include items such as banana splits or sundaes.

Resident Patrick Redding stopped by the shop on Monday and said he was “thrilled” to have found it. He noted that he was particularly excited for a different option than the several frozen yogurt spots in Astoria.

An awning for the former nail salon still sits over the property; Iseni said he expects to have it switched out this week.

Finally some good news for Astoria.

The Transplants and Yuppies and Hipsters can’t even ruin this one.

Is propylene glycol used in the ingredients? In California, it is not allowed but there are many frozen yogurt and ice cream shops that use it in NY and NJ. Thanks!
