A company that provides co-working space and offices internationally will open its first Queens location at Studio Square.
Called WeWork, the company has leased more than 50,000 square feet of space at 35-37 36th St., as Commercial Observer first reported.
WeWork has locations throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as several other U.S. cities, Israel, London and Amsterdam. It caters to employees and business owners who do not have a traditional office; members can use common workspace for a month starting at $350, or rent a private desk, office or meeting space.
A WeWork spokesperson said the company is not commenting on the Studio Square deal, but confirmed that it will occupy 51,677 square-feet of space over four floors and the roof.
According to George Karnoupakis of the Vanbarton Group, which owns the building, offices at Studio Square are now fully leased.
The Studio Square beer garden occupies the first floor and an outdoor courtyard. The Miami Ad School is moving into the third floor, Karnoupakis said.
“We are thrilled to announce that WeWork has chosen our building as its first Queens location,” Karnoupakis said in a statement.
Argentina Flores, the founder of a co-working space called QNS Collective that opened just up the block at 36-27 36th Street last year, said there is borough-wide demand for this type of workspace.
“We’re servicing all of Queens, not just Astoria,” Flores said. “We opened a year ago and we’ve been at capacity.”
Flores also noted that she has not seen one specific industry dominating the use of co-working space. She said QNS Collective members include architects, accountants and IT specialists as well as freelancers and independents.
As for the location, Astoria is “just perfect” for co-workers, Flores said.
“[If] they have to go service their clients in the City, it’s two train stops away,” she said.
