A 21-year woman who was crossing Ditmars Blvd this morning was struck and killed by a motorist who fled the scene.
Betty Jean Dibiasio, an Astoria resident, was knocked to the pavement while crossing Ditmars Boulevard at 19th Street at around 12:30 am.
The police arrived on the scene and found Dibiasio lying on the roadway, unconscious and unresponsive with severe head trauma. She was transported to Elmhurst Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The NYPD determined that she was hit by a car traveling westbound on Ditmars Bound while Dibiasio was walking from south to north.
The driver fled the scene. There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.

Just awful. I knew her because I worked at Portobello. She offered to cover for me many times. What might be in order is to either close that road to vehicles or speed bumps.
Yes – true they got him. NBC reporting. Another young life wasted – but one day this scum will go home. This poor girl will never go home to her parents.

It takes a dead 21 year old girl to get traffic cops in this neighborhood that has long been plagued by reckless animals behind the wheel (motorcyclists included). I think we should shut down Ditmars between shore blvd/19thth – that seems to be the main drag strip for these mothereffers. Why can’t they just hit a tree and kill themselves instead. SCUM. My deepest and most pain filled condolences to Betty Jean’s loved ones. I recognize her face from around the neighborhood. I did not know her, but I am feeling this for some reason. It could have been any of us, and she was so damn young.
Terrible tragedy.
Probably an inebriated/unlicensed driver with an uninsured vehicle who was just about to call the car in as stolen. I don’t think it will be too long until we find out.
There should be severe penalties enforced for leaving the scene of an accident.

Friend of the family told me cops got a guy for questioning but notsure if its him …the car was found behind 42-43 st
