Astoria Playground to Undergo $550,000 Upgrade

Location of Playground

Dec. 13, 2013 By Christian Murray

An Astoria playground is in for a big upgrade.

The city is injecting $550,000 into the renovation of the Triborough Bridge Playground-A, located at 21st Street and Hoyt Avenue North, which will used to add exercise equipment, two all-weather permanent ping pong tables, two new volleyball courts as well as new drains and fences. It will also fund the reconstruction of an existing handball wall.

Councilman Peter F. Vallone Jr. was able to allocate $275,000 of city funds for the renovations, which were matched by the mayor.

“Volleyball and ping pong are sports I’ve grown up playing and are great to participate in at any age – but unfortunately it’s sometimes difficult to find a place to play,” Vallone said in a statement.

“I’m excited to bring these activities to Astoria and bring this long dormant park back to life,” Vallone added.
