Gianaris at Greek Independence Day parade

New York State is about to have its very own Greek History month.
State Sen. Mike Gianaris passed a resolution that proclaims March 2015 as Greek History Month. The same resolution was also passed by the state Assembly, which was sponsored by Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas.
The resolution sets out to honor both Greek history and Greek-Americans who live in New York.
“As the first Greek-American to hold elected office in New York, I am deeply proud of the many contributions Greek-Americans have made to our city and our country,” Gianaris said.
The resolution also marks Greek Independence Day, which is celebrated March 25.
“It is an honor to declare March 2015 Greek History Month in the state of New York,” Gianaris said, who marched in the 5th Avenue Greek Independence Parade on Sunday. The parade was attended by thousands of Greek Americans.
Gianaris said he also attended the unveiling of the new Sophocles statue on Saturday at Athens Square Park as part of the celebrations.
“The sculpture will add even more ancient wisdom to our community’s beloved open space,” he said.
