A 48-year-old Astoria man faces charges for allegedly breaking into several cars and stealing airbags as well as hybrid vehicle battery packs.

Peter Ali, who lives at 14-39 29th Avenue, allegedly broke into a Taxi and stole a hybrid vehicle battery pack valued at approximately $4000. He then allegedly broke into two other cars and swiped their airbags, according to Queens District Attorney’s office.

Ali was allegedly caught on video breaking into the hybrid vehicle and stealing its battery pack at 52-05 Queens Blvd on Dec. 28.

He was then observed using a flashlight to look in the interior of a silver Toyota Camry on the corner of 21st Street and 29th Avenue on Feb. 25, before allegedly stealing that car’s airbag. The following day, Ali is alleged to have taken another airbag from a 2010 Toyota minivan parked near Austin Street and Union Turnpike.

He has been charged with third-degree grand larceny, third degree criminal mischief and a number of other charges.

“The defendant now faces the prospect of spending the next seven years of his life behind bars, if convicted,” said Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown.
