The Community Board 1 monthly meeting, which was held at the Astoria World Manor, was unusually short last night largely because the Health Department had shut the venue down.

The entire meeting was completed in just an hour.

Astoria World Manor, located at 25-22 Astoria Blvd, remained closed after the health department closed the banquet hall earlier in the week.

Community Board 1 Chairman Vinicio Donato said that the board was not sure until 4:30 pm whether it would be permitted to hold the meeting at the venue. However, the health department let the community board hold the meeting as long as there was no food or drink on location.

“They [the health department] were nice enough to let us in here because it would be impossible to change the meeting location on such short notice,” Donato said.

Several times throughout the evening Donato announced that the host would not provide food or beverages. Furthermore, anyone coming in with food/drink had to take it outside or throw it out.

The closure coupled with the cold conditions led to a smaller turnout of board members, with only 27 board members attending.

The board, nevertheless, still held the usual city planning and consumer affair hearings.

Five restaurants sought permission to establish—or renew–their outdoor cafe licenses. All were approved.
