The 114th Precinct is joining the information age and will soon be on Twitter.

Deputy Inspector Kevin Maloney, the precinct’s commanding officer, said he and some of his officers from the precinct will be undergo a training session in December.

The precinct’s Twitter account is expected to launch late December and the handle will be @NYPD114Pct.

The precinct will use Twitter to notify the public as to police precinct meetings and to get the word on ways to prevent crime.

“Through Twitter we will be able to get out any information from our crime prevention desk,” Maloney said. “If there are any [suspect] wanted posters we can post those on there too.”

Several Queens precincts are on Twitter and have generated a good following. The 108 precinct, which covers Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City, introduced it in September and already has about 1,000 followers.

Maloney said that Twitter will also be a good way for the community to communicate with the precinct.

“If there is anything you see that you want to report, you can send it to us on Twitter,” he said. “It is another venue, that our department has to utilize.”

Maloney said that three-quarters of the precincts citywide are now on Twitter, with most of the feedback being positive.

Maloney said Twitter is another way the precinct can improve community outreach, which is vital in the precinct’s 2015 strategy.
