Astoria: Florida man arrested for running over cop in stolen pickup

Sarback

Sept. 24, 2013 By Christian Murray

The police have arrested a Lake Worth, Florida, man who allegedly drove a stolen pickup truck into a police officer in Astoria last month.

Gary Sarback, 61, hit the officer on Aug. 22 with a vehicle on Crescent Street (near Broadway) and then crashed it a few blocks away before fleeing on foot, according to police.

The incident began when two police officers tried to pull over a stolen vehicle with Florida license plates, since it matched the description of a Ford truck used in the robbery of a woman in East Elmhurst earlier in the day.

Police say Sarback refused to stop and hit one of the officers.

The officers responded by firing their weapons. The suspect then crashed the truck.

The Queensboro Bridge was shut down briefly as cops canvassed the area.

The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Sarback has been charged for Attempted murder on a Police Officer, Assault, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property
