A dedicated work force is now cleaning a greater number of streets in Astoria.
Councilman Costa Constantinides, who brought on workers from the Doe Fund to clean large sections of the neighborhood in April, announced earlier this week that he has expanded the coverage area.
The expanded district now brings a cleaning crew to Steinway Street—from 28th Avenue to Astoria Boulevard; 23rd Avenue (from 29th Street to 33rd Street); Ditmars Boulevard (from 29th Street to 33rd Street) and Newtown Road (from 30th Avenue to 41st Street). The workers started cleaning this new area on Aug. 3.
The Doe Fund workers are responsible for emptying the trash, sweeping the streets and picking up garbage. The Doe Fund is a non-profit organization that provides formerly homeless and incarcerated people with jobs.
These new areas are being added to the existing coverage area that includes: 30th Ave from Athens Square Park to Steinway Street; Broadway from 31st Street to Steinway Street; and 31st Street from Ditmars Blvd to 23rd Ave.
In total, Constantinides has allocated $130,000 to the Doe Fund, which will keep these sections of the neighborhood covered until at least June 30, 2015.
The streets that were selected as part of the program were based largely on feedback his office had received from constituents.
A press conference will be held tomorrow on the corner of Steinway Street and 25th Avenue at 10am that will provide further details on the program.
