Greek restaurant to open at former Frank’s Bakery location

July 28, 2014 By Michael Florio

Another part of Athens is on its way to Astoria.

A family-owned Greek eatery—yet to be named–will be opening at 36-02 30th Ave, the former location of Frank’s Bakery.

The new owners, who have only been living in Astoria for two month, operate a restaurant/café called Barcode in Athens and expect this restaurant to be similar. They aim to open by the end of September.

Kosta Moschos, an owner/chef, said he is fond of the neighborhood and has known it a long time. He said that he has always been a frequent visitor, since he has so many friends and family members who live here.

“We know this area and consider ourselves part of the community,” Moschos said.

Moschos said his family found this location last August, while visiting. Once they knew it was available, they wanted it, he said.

“This is a Greek area,” he said. “There is a need for us here.”

The restaurant will serve items such as Soulvaki, Lachmatzoun (Greek meat pies), coffee, and a variety of Greek salads and sandwiches.

The eatery will seat 150 people, including an outdoor seating area.

Moschos is still active in Barcode in Athens. He travels back there often.

Greece is Greek. Astoria is an American city. How about meeting people from other cultures? That’s part of what makes NYC great. Live a little!

I’m going to say, there is probably *not* the need for another greek restaurant in Astoria. What we need is a Korean food place.
