July 28, 2014 By Christian Murray

One man was killed and six others injured after a vehicle struck a curb, then a fire hydrant and flipped over on its side on an Astoria sidewalk yesterday, the police said.

Anthony Boyd, 45, was driving a 2002 Kia Sedona at around 4:45pm yesterday when he struck the curb in the vicinity of 35th Avenue and 21st Street. From there his vehicle went careening into a fire hydrant before resting on its side, according to police.

Boyd, who was with five passengers, was announced dead on arrival when he was taken to Mt Sinai Hospital. The passengers, who were initially trapped inside the vehicle, were transported to Elmhurst Hospital and were in stable condition.

According to published reports, the passengers included Boyd’s wife as well as two children.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian, who was struck by debris from the vehicle, was taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in stable condition.

The police said the investigation is ongoing.

That is a rather mis-leading headline as it leads you to believe that the injured were not also in the car with the driver. In fact, it doesn’t even make clear that the deceased in question WAS the driver.
