Con Edison is working to restore power to nearly 450 customers in Long Island City by Tuesday evening.
The power outage started around 10 p.m. on Monday, and at its peak, 1,600 customers were without power. The impacted area largely covers Broadway and 21st Street north to 30th Drive and east to Crescent Street.
Con Edison has been distributing dry ice in the parking lot at Long Island City High School, located at 12th Street and Broadway. The utility company also has a mobile information center at the location until 9 p.m. where workers will be available to answer questions. The dry ice distribution will run until 9 p.m. or until supplies run out.
Instructions for safe handling and disposal of dry ice are printed on the bag containing the ice. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide and should only be used in well-ventilated areas. Children and pets should be kept safely away from dry ice.
