Violent crime plummets in Astoria

June 1, 2013 By Christian Murray

Violent crime continues to plummet in Astoria — as the number of murders, robberies and felony assaults tumble.

The crime rate has dropped 17% so far this year in the 114 Precinct (which primarily covers Astoria), compared to the same time period in 2012.

The murder rate has dropped 50% compared to last year, from 4 to 2 — while the number of robberies has fallen 35%, with 83 incidents reported compared to 127 last year.

Crime is down in six of the seven major categories, according to the latest NYPD data:

— Felony assaults are down 35%, with 102 incidents reported, compared to 136 for the same period in 2012.

— The number of reported burglaries dropped 19%, with 32 fewer incidents reported in 2013.

The only major crime category that saw an increase was rape. There have been 15 reported rapes this year compared to 14 in 2012.  However, there was no increase in stranger rapes, according to reports.
