Astoria bar/restaurant–specializing in roast sandwiches–opened Wednesday

June 1, 2013 By Bill Parry

Astoria’s newest neighborhood bar and restaurant had a successful soft opening on Wednesday night.

The Sandwich Bar, located at 33-01 Ditmars Blvd., which specializes in sandwiches made with slow roasted and hand carved meats, served 130 diners on Wednesday night.

The restaurant is Theo Stamatiou’s first in the United States after owning several bars and catering businesses in Greece. After moving to Astoria in 2004 and finishing his education, he felt it was time to start a restaurant.

Stamatiou, who views sandwich making as an art form, said he was pleased with his opening night. “We did good, with no advertising at all,” he said. He said the restaurant served more than 130 diners over the course of the evening. “We served a lot of friends and plenty of walk-in customers; it was so much fun.”

The Sandwich Bar features a menu of hand-carved roast beef, turkey and other meat sandwiches. The bar/restaurant also offers salads, soups and burgers.

The restaurant, which also doubles as a local watering hole, sells 12 draft beers, 8 bottled brands and 10 wines by the glass. The Sandwich Bar also refills growlers with Wolaver Organic and Shiner Bock beers as well as Angry Orchard Hard Cider.

The Sandwich Bar also offers catering, take-out, delivery and outdoor seating.
