In celebration of National Volunteer Month, Chandra Darsan, a local Astoria Park resident, was inducted into the 4th Annual New York Road Runners (NYRR) Volunteer Hall of Fame, along with six others.

This honor is a token of appreciation for volunteers’ pivotal role in supporting NYRR’s events, including the iconic TCS New York City Marathon.

Chandra Darsan, a fervent advocate for community and personal well-being, began her journey with NYRR in 2015 as a participant. Despite having no prior experience in running and facing personal health challenges such as borderline diabetes, asthma and being overweight, Darsan found inspiration in the communal spirit of the NYRR Open Run at Astoria Park. This propelled her to transition from a participant to a volunteer and eventually to a Run Captain.

“Volunteering as a Run Captain has not only motivated me to take my health seriously but also inspired me not to give up on myself,” Darsan shared. Her commitment saw her shed 30 pounds and complete an impressive tally of 119 NYRR races, including five New York City Marathons and 28 NYRR Half Marathons.

At 57, her enthusiasm remains undiminished. “So many people know me now!,” Darsan exclaimed, proud of the influence she has on encouraging new runners.

NYRR recognizes the indispensable contributions of over 10,000 volunteers who make the TCS New York City Marathon a reality each year and the 15,000 others who support weekly races and additional events. April, designated as National Volunteer Month, presents a perfect opportunity to honor these individuals for their dedication and service.

Darsan’s story is particularly inspiring as it includes a familial aspect; her grandchildren, ages 12 and 9, frequently volunteer with her, potentially nurturing a future generation of runners and volunteers.

As she looks to the future, Darsan is enthusiastic about continuing her volunteer work with NYRR. “I plan on contributing for a long time to come,” she affirmed, signaling her ongoing commitment to the NYRR community and inspiring others.
